MCHC Spreading Holiday Cheer

As the holidays quickly approach, many of us are reminded of the good fortune that has bestowed itself upon us throughout the year and look to pay it forward.

For over 20 years, Monroe County Hospital & Clinics and its staff members have made it their mission to create good fortune and holiday cheer in the community. One major way they are able to do that is through the annual Christmas Families project. By participating in this project, MCHC is able to work with local agencies to identify families in need from the Monroe County area and supply them with clothing, shoes, bedding, towels, household and toiletry items, as well as gift cards for groceries, gas, and local restaurants.  And of course, toys and special gifts for families on Christmas morning.

“One year we helped a husband who was dying of cancer purchase a special engraved bracelet for his wife. This was the last holiday they shared together,” stated Angela Freeman, Christmas Families project coordinator, “Our goal is to spread joy and happiness during this special season.”

In order to create funding for these gifts MCHC hosts various events throughout the year such as Books are Fun Book and Gift fairs three times per year, this event is open to community members, and large internal fundraisers such as Hospital Week raffles and a free will donation bake sale in December. Pop cans and bottles are also collected throughout the year to help fund the project.

While the exact amount for this year has not yet been calculated, it is estimated to be between $2,500 – $3,500 and donations are still rolling in. Additionally, staff members at MCHC are still donating items that they have purchased using their own funding. Generally, this will impact about 20-25 people ranging in age from newborn to adult.

Staff members at MCHC love participating in the project yearly, and see it as a way to thank their patients and visitors while giving back to the communities they serve.
