What is a DXA Scan?
The dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan measures bone mineral density (BMD). The amount of bone mineral is directly related to the bone density. The scanner uses a small amount of x-ray to measure bone mineral density of the spine, hip or forearm. Typically, the spine and hips are used to measure because that is where most fractures occur. The DXA scan is quick, noninvasive, and painless.
How do I Prepare for the Scan?
Do not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before the exam. You may eat normally the day of the exam. Dress comfortably avoiding garments that have metal such as zippers, rivets, belts or buttons.
What happens during the test?
You will be asked to lie on your back on the exam table. An x-ray generator arm is located above you. The technologist will position your legs for the test, and the x-ray arm will pass over the top of your body producing images on a computer monitor. The exam takes approximately 10 minutes.
The Results
A bone density test is an aid in determining the diagnosis of osteoporosis. The information provided will help your doctor determine what course of action should be taken.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak, thin, and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures. It often has no symptoms until a bone breaks. About 1 in 2 women after menopause develop osteoporosis. Possible signs include height loss and a curved upper back, and the condition can often be managed with lifestyle changes and medical treatment.
You may be at risk for osteoporosis if you have these risk factors:
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Not exercising
- Smoking
- Drinking too much alcohol
- Early menopause
- Low calcium diet
- Frequent falls or history of fractures as an adult
- Long term use of certain medications such as steroids, seizure medications, proton pump inhibitors and others
How to get a DXA Scan?
Discuss the need for a DXA Scan with your medical provider. An order will be sent to the radiology department, and you will be contacted to schedule a scan.
DXA Scans are covered by Medicare and private insurances every 2 years.
