“Kim embodies the very best of healthcare through her compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to others,” said Brian Teeter, Chief Nursing Officer at MCHC. “She went far beyond the expectations of her role to help a patient secure a safe home while providing companionship, dignity, and comfort. Her commitment continued even after the patient’s placement. Kim became family when there were none. Receiving this award for a second time is a well-deserved honor that reflects the lasting difference she makes in the lives of others.”
The IHA Hospital Hero Award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond in service to others, whether through courageous actions in a moment of crisis, extraordinary compassion and commitment to patient care, or a lifetime of meaningful contributions to their hospital and community.
Higginbotham was recognized for her tireless advocacy for a patient without a guardian or immediate support system. Over nine months, she worked through medical and legal challenges to help secure a safe, appropriate home. Along the way, she provided daily walks, companionship and personal items, giving the patient comfort and a sense of normalcy during a difficult time. She continues to visit the patient following her placement, demonstrating a commitment that extends beyond her professional responsibilities.
“I am very honored,” Higginbotham said. “Many people worked with me for many months to help this patient. Every one of them is a hero.”
Higginbotham previously received the Hospital Hero Award in 2016 for organizing and facilitating the Healing Hearts Grief Day Camp, a free event for children and teenagers mourning the loss of a loved one.

Each year, hospitals across Iowa nominate outstanding employees for the IHA Hospital Hero Awards. Recipients are selected based on their commitment to serving others and the meaningful difference they make within their organizations and communities.
